Swinney Vineyards is a 160-hectare family estate set in the remote Frankland River sub-region of WA's Great Southern, farmed across four generations with dry farming and organic practices. The estate is widely regarded as one of Australia's finest sites for Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre, with additional plantings of Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Tempranillo and more. The Farvie label — made from the estate's best, organically managed parcels — earned international critical acclaim, with critic Matthew Jukes calling the 2024 release "an unmissable chapter of wines." The vineyard was named Vineyard of the Year in 2020. There is no public cellar door; visitors are invited to join the mailing list for tasting events.
Swinney is not certified organic but farms with organic practices including dry farming and minimal intervention. The Farvie label specifically comes from the estate's best organically managed parcels.
The 160-hectare estate grows Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Tempranillo, Viognier, Vermentino and smaller parcels of Mencia, Counoise and Cinsault.
Swinney does not currently operate a public cellar door. They plan to host annual tasting events in the future — join the mailing list at swinney.com.au to be notified.
The vineyard is at 325 Frankland-Kojonup Road, Frankland River WA 6396, in the Great Southern wine region — one of WA's most isolated and acclaimed wine-growing areas.
