Fighting Gully Road is a Beechworth winery built around Sangiovese — the owners fell for the variety in Tuscany in 1995 and chose Beechworth precisely because its alpine escarpment climate echoes northern Italy's. Viticulturist and winemaker Mark Walpole, respected across the Victorian wine scene, produces savoury, Italian-inspired reds, whites and rosé with an ongoing focus on wild and indigenous yeasts and varied barrel-ageing styles. No formal organic certification is held, but farming and winemaking are low-intervention. Tastings are by appointment only at 12 Kurrajong Way, Mayday Hills.
