False Cape Wines is the largest vineyard on Kangaroo Island — a 70-acre estate on the Dudley Peninsula, grown on north-facing Terra Rossa soils over limestone. Established in 1999 by Jamie and Julie Helyar alongside the Follett winemaking family of Lake Breeze Wines, the property grows grapes as naturally as possible: the red varieties are dry grown, the entire operation runs off solar power, free-range turkeys handle pest management and sheep mow the cover crops in winter. The result is a range of characterful Kangaroo Island wines — Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio — with no formal organic certification but a genuine commitment to minimal-input viticulture. The cellar door is open daily 11am–5pm (closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day) and serves platters, homemade pies and chefs specials alongside tastings.
